Holly's Homemade Year

Holly’s Homemade Year
Ingredients
- Three B-Bs (S, F, D)
- Several pairs of running shoes
- City of Duluth
- A well-equipped kitchen
- One extensive classroom library
- An amazing array of co-workers
- Various i-Devices
- Wealth of family and friends near and far
Steps:
- Sign up for your 2nd Grandma’s Marathon. Find more satisfaction in the training than on race day. Decide to put 26.2 behind you; at least you tried it and finished.
- Reluctantly admit that your daughter will not spend the summer at home. She’s pretty much a grown-up, dang it.
- Instead, do what you can to enjoy your son’s remaining days at home: Attend concerts, chaperone a youth group trip to Atlanta, get him a job working for your dad’s business, send Bitmojis, coerce him mow the lawn on occasion, and make lunchbox treats. Mom duty is one of the best gigs ever.
- Celebrate a milestone anniversary with 25 pies and 25 K on Duluth trails. Feel blessed by this amazing life journey with Mr. B-B.
- Throughout the year, binge on Netflix while you bake. It’s the new way to multi-task.
- Add your 21st year of teaching in Duluth to the mix. Find yourself humbled and honored with a nomination as MN Teacher of the Year.
- In December, start the usual panic about how to get it all accomplished. Thanks to laryngitis, you manage it. (A 2-day baking and Netflix bonanza!)
- It’s your last year as a 40-something. (Holy S*#!) Try not to panic, you know the mantra: Just Keep Swimming. So, you will.
- Wrap up your holiday greetings by wishing everyone a Happy New Year!
Frost Flambe

Frost Flambe

- 100 Swim Practices
- 1 Summer Job

Directions
- Spend countless hours practicing horn in solitude and in rehearsal to best prepare for concerts and college auditions.
- Plan help to run Duluth East High School Homecoming and other events with a group of 20 and have lots of fun in the process.
- Spend the summer planting trees, spreading seed and learning while working for Grandpa’s business: Prairie Restorations.
- Apply to Carleton College (to please your mother), St. Olaf College, Luther College, and University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.
Sylvie's Sophomore Strudel

Sylvie’s Sophomore Strudel
Ingredients:
- Knox College Student ID
- Laptop Computer and How-To YouTube Videos
- 12 passenger Van
- Water Polo Ball
- Chinese-English Dictionary
- Hamilton Ticket (prepare well in advance)
- A love of Harry Potter
Directions
- Preheat dorm room to 95 degrees.
- Unexpectedly struggle to learn computer code for an Environmental Studies course, but make it through the first year of college okay anyway.
- As a Conservation Corps crew leader, fill the van with a Co-Leader and 8-9 teenagers and work in various Minnesota parks for the summer (ignore the fact that you are also a teenager).
- In the fall water polo season, block a goal with your face. Maybe you didn’t mean to do it, but don’t let that stop you from taking praise from your teammates.
- Ignore the Chinese dictionary in favor of Google Translate. Start to get excited about off campus study.
- Spend fall pumped for seeing Hamilton in Chicago with the family. Re-listen to the soundtrack many times, but still fail to keep up with the fast rap.
- End the year rereading the Harry Potter series and catching up with the “Harry Potter and the Sacred Text” podcast. You think that maybe the US President could also do with a reminder that “It is our choices that show who we truly are.” Regardless, be glad that you somehow made it through 2017.
Family Flavors
Here’s what you get when you have the Bowen-Baileys all together.

Family Vacation Surprise
Ingredients:
- 4 B-Bs
- 5 days in August
- 2 tandem kayaks
- Duct tape
- Isle Royale, Lake Superior
- Gusting wind and 10-foot waves
- Very nervous ferry boat captain
- 1 unreliable Volkswagen
Directions
- Finally take long-awaited, bucket-list trip to the largest island on the largest lake in North America.
- Repair leaky kayak with duct tape, thank goodness.
- Enjoy 4 lovely days and nights paddling, hiking, picking blueberries and all that stuff.
- Wake to big winds on the big lake.
- Avoid capsizing in challenging conditions and get “rescued” by a park service ranger and his power boat.
- Learn a new term: Type 3 Fun – the kind that sucks while you are going through it but really makes a great story. (This includes barfing your guts out on a ferry that has to turn around.)
- Return a day late to the mainland.
- Spend an hour with the tow-truck driver and leave your VW in Ironwood for $1500 in unexpected repairs.
- Cross Isle Royale off the bucket list. Hope that the trip to Chicago at Thanksgiving has less Type 3 Fun.
